The Municipality of Embu was birthed through the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Article 184 and the consequent Urban Areas and Cities Act of 2011.
In 2018, the Municipality was chartered upon the approval of the Integrated Strategic Urban Development Plan (ISUDP) and the County Urban Integrated Development Strategy (CUIDS).
The Municipality of Embu comprises of Embu town and other peripheral urban centres, with Embu town being the headquarters of Embu County Government. Embu Town is also the hub of national government operations in the larger Eastern Kenya region.
Embu Municipality is located in the middle part of Kenya, on 00 31◦E and 370 27◦S on the globe and 1350 metres above sea level and is the economic hub of Embu County with Kshs. 103 billion Gross Domestic Product.
The municipality of Embu is governed by a Municipal Board. The board’s mandate as defined by law and includes:
